SBA Summer Reading Requirements 2009

All students (Traditional, Plus, Honors & AP) will be required to read one summer reading book from the REQUIRED list below at the student’s grade level.  Please note that students taking Advanced Placement classes have additional REQUIRED reading.

  • Students taking Traditional/Plus/Honors/AP English will be given a multiple choice test (on REQUIRED reading) on Monday, August 24.  The test will be preceded by classroom discussion the previous week.
  • Students taking Advanced Placement English will be assigned a writing assignment over the summer due on Monday, Aug. 24, on the second required reading book.

  • In addition to the multiple choice test, each student will be required to write a paper relating to some aspect of that REQUIRED summer reading book during the first nine week grading period. 
  • Students have an opportunity to earn 1 – 5 extra credit points on the multiple choice test by reading ONE of the books from the OPTIONAL TEXTS list below. They will be required to write a brief essay on one optional text as part of the multiple choice test administered on Aug. 24.

REQUIRED TEXTS: GRADES 9 -12 (TRADITIONAL, PLUS, HONORS, AND ADVANCED PLACEMENT)

9th Grade:

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

10th Grade:

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

11th Grade:

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

In addition to the above mentioned book, 11th Grade AP Classes will also read:

How to Read Literature Like A Professor by Thomas C. Foster

12th Grade:

The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

In addition to the above-mentioned book, 12th Grade AP Classes will also read:

Palace Walk by Naguib Mahouz

OPTIONAL TEXTS:

Students may choose one book from their grade level to read and have an opportunity to earn 1 – 5 extra credit points on the Summer Reading Test by successfully writing a brief essay on that book  on the test given August 24.
