PLUS Program

Positive Learning Utilizing Strategies

The PLUS program provides highly structured, small, self-contained classes for students with average to above average intelligence, a diagnosed learning disability (LD), and/or attention and hyperactivity disorders. (ADD, ADHD).

Placement tests, a psychological evaluation that is no more than three years old, previous school records, and interviews with the student and parents are used to evaluate applicants. Acceptance into the PLUS program is based on the review of this information by the evaluation team.  Attendance in another special program, resource class or PLUS program does not guarantee placement into St. Benedict at Auburndale’s PLUS Program.  PLUS Program students and parents must commit to a college prep course of study with individualized accommodations.

The primary goal of the PLUS program is to prepare students for graduation from high school and higher education.  The PLUS Program follows SBA’s philosophy of instilling confidence in students by building on students’ strengths.  Students are educated using accommodations recommended by the psychological evaluation to aid in areas of weakness while building on their individual strengths. The result is a strong work ethic along with the academic knowledge necessary for achievement.

PLUS students take a traditional high school curriculum using individualized accommodations.  Students receive special attention in small, highly structured classes. The small teacher/student ratio, together with the guidance from the Director of the PLUS Program, have proven to increase success and reinforce growth while building self confidence and self esteem.

An education profile is written for each student from information gathered from the psychological report.  The profile includes strengths, weaknesses, accommodations and the learning difference.  No IEP is written because the plan for all students is the individual course requirements.

Students are placed in traditional or PLUS classes that are appropriate for their individual needs. All students who graduate from St. Benedict receive a high school diploma regardless of the program.

For items required to complete and submit an application, please refer to the Admissions Process section.  Please note the two additional items required for PLUS applicants file.
