February 19, 2011

The Eagles’ season came to a close on Saturday at MBA as they lost the cross over game, 63-35. The game was out of the Eagles’ hands early as MBA outscored the Eagles in every quarter except the fourth. Both Ryan Van Hoeck and Jordan Wilkins finished the night with 10 points. The Eagles end their season at 14-14.


February 16, 2011

It was a sluggish night for the Eagles who lost to MUS, 44-38, in the 2nd round of the Region Tournament. The Eagles, beating MUS twice during the regular season, had tired legs after the close game with CBHS the night before. This places them in a cross-over game on Saturday in Nashville against MBA for a shot to the quarterfinals or sub-state of the State Tournament. The Eagles’ record is now even at 14-14.


February 15, 2011

After beating region archrival CBHS, the Eagles lost a heartbreaker in the first round of the region Tournament to the Brothers, 46-44. The loss puts the Eagles in the third place game tonight at 7:30 against MUS. All scorers for both teams were led by sophomore Jordan Wilkins with 17 points and the second leading scorer of the night was SBA junior Rodney Clarke with 11. The Eagles were plagued with turnovers and slow first half and only 9 out of 23 buckets from the free throw line. SBA is guaranteed a cross-over game on Saturday, and a win tonight guarantees that the Eagles will host the game on Saturday.

The Eagles captured their second win of the season over CBHS (43-41) at a senior night home game with a 15-footer by Ryan Van Hoeck that put the Eagles up by two with only 2.5 seconds left on the clock. CBHS couldn’t get the ball close to the goal to tie and the Eagles finished with a 4-2 record in the region, placing them in second place going into the region playoffs. A bright spot for the Eagles was Jake Jeffrey’s 11 points (including 3 3-pointers). Van Hoeck also contributed 11 and Jordan Wilkins had eight for the night. The second seeded Eagles will have to win another from CBHS in the region tournament at Briarcrest on Tuesday, at 7:30, in order to meet either Briarcrest, the number one seed, or MUS in the finals. The Eagles finished the regular season with 14-11 overall record and 4-2 region record.


February 7, 2011

The Eagles had the special opportunity to play in the FedEx Forum with a team from Marion, IL before the Grizzlies game with the Lakers. SBA had 250 fans in attendance as the Eagles had a close game with Marion only to lose at the buzzer by one point from a 3-pointer from their little guard Eddie Webb. The final was 64-63 Marion. SBA’s points were spread across the roster with Trey Wilkins, Jordan Wilkins and Ryan Van Hoeck all finishing with 11 and Joseph Hale contributing 10. It was a great experience for the Eagles and they hope to have the opportunity, again, next year. The Eagles, 3-2 in the region, are preparing for one of the most important region match-ups on Friday as they host CBHS, also 3-2 in the region.


February 4, 2011

The Eagles were tripped up by Briarcrest, 72-64 in a region match-up to put them in three-way tie for first place in the region standings. The Eagles held their own in a very tough and rough game with Ryan Van Hoeck contributing 21 points and Jordan Wilkins dropping in 19. The Eagles play at the FedEx Forum on Monday, Feb. 7 at 2:30 against Marion, (IL) High School. The Eagles are 13-10 overall and 3-2 in the region.


February 1, 2011

The Eagles hosted MHEA, once again, and sent the other Eagles home with another defeat, 51-44. This senior night game, a bit closer in score, had Ryan Van Hoeck contribute 16 points and seven rebounds with sophomore Jordan Wilkins dropping in 11 points and five rebounds. The Eagles advance their overall record to 13-9 and travel to Briarcrest on Friday for a very crucial region match-up.


January 28, 2011

WinterFest Spirit Week ended up with an outstanding victory by the Eagles over MUS, 49-34, in a region game. Ryan Van Hoeck contributed 15 points and Rodney Clarke and Jordan Wilkins both contributed 11 points for the night. The Eagles lead the region with three wins and one loss and hold at 12-9 overall record for the season.


January 25, 2011

The Eagles returned home for a game with MHEA and had a solid victory of 65-49 with points contributed by almost everyone.


January 22, 2011

The Eagles traveled to CBHS for a postponed (due to snow) Region game and came away with an outstanding effort, defeating the Purple Wave 59-53 on their home court. The Eagles were led by Jordan Wilkins with a decisive 24 points and a tremendous dunk that brought the SBA fans to their feet. Girls Basketball – The Lady Eagles also traveled to St. Agnes for a made-up region game and came away victors with a 44-31 finish.


January 17, 2011

The Eagles came close to beating a feisty Harding team, but dropped the game 68-67 in the closing seconds of the game. Jordan Wilkins contributed 23 points,  with Jake Jeffrey contributing 13. The loss leaves the Eagles’ record even at 9-9 overall. A big region match-up on Friday at CBHS should prove to be another exciting Eagle game.


January 14, 2011

The Eagles closed in on Briarcrest in the 2nd half, but it was a little too late to catch the Saints, as they bested SBA 77-56 in a region match-up. Jordan Wilkins gave an outstanding effort with 20 points, but the loss dropped the Eagles to 9-8 (1-1 in the region).


January 11, 2011

The Eagles had another good night with a 76-59 win over the FCA Nighthawks. The Eagles spread the lead out in the first few minutes of the game, leading throughout the night. They were led by a strong presence from Jake Jeffrey for 21 (four three-pointers) and Ryan Van Hoeck with 18. Jordan Wilkins followed with 11 points for the night. The Eagles had a total of 32 rebounds as well and move their record to 9-7 for the year. They open home region action on Fri., Jan. 14 against a tough Briarcrest team.


January 7, 2011

The Eagles opened up region action at MUS with a decisive win over the Owls, 55-44. The Eagles led by ten at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, leading MUS the entire game. Sophomore Jordan Wilkins contributed 17 points for the night with Jake Jeffrey helping out with three 3”s and a free throw for 10. The Eagles are 8-7 for the year and 1-0 in the region and host FCA Tuesday, Jan. 11 followed by a big region match at SBA on Fri., Jan. 14 against Briarcrest.


January 4, 2011

The Eagles hosted a very quick, intense Brighton team, but stormed back to get within one at the end. The Eagles were behind 35-16 at the half, but dropped in 21 points in both the third and fourth quarters to come close to beating the 13-3 Cardinals. In addition to adding 42 points to the board in the second half, the Eagles held the Cardinals to only 24 points in a great defensive second half. Senior forward Ryan Van Hoeck came out strong in the second half with a total of 13 points, with two buckets from outside the rim. The 7-7 Eagles open region action at MUS on Fri., Jan. 7.


December 21-22, 2010

The Eagles hosted the First Annual Holiday Hoops Invitational with an eight-team bracket. SBA played University High School out of Baton Rouge, followed by Nashville’s Ravenwood and ending with a match-up with Nashville MBA, the defending Div. II-AA State Champion. The Eagles handily took care of business against University with a 63-34 victory. Almost all the players scored for the Eagles during the night as they advanced their record to 7-4. But, the Eagles came up short against Ravenwood and MBA, losing to Ravenwood by a score of 67-52 and losing to MBA by a score of 50-31. The Eagles placed 5th in the tournament, that had Ravenwood advance to the finals against Southaven, who were the ultimate winners over Ravenwood 65-60.The Eagles take a break for Christmas and will be back in action January 4, 2011 at home against Brighton.


December 20, 2010

The Eagles extended their record to 7-4 with a win over University High of Baton Rouge, 63-34 in their own Holiday Hoops Invitational. Almost everyone on the team scored for the Eagles as they handily took care of University. They meet-up with Nashville Ravenwood, who beat Allatoona out of Georgia, 59-43, in the second round tomorrow at 7:30.


December 17 & 18, 2010

The Eagles had a great weekend of basketball with back-to-back wins, first over a very tough and disciplined St. George’s team (last year’s defending Div. II-A State Champion), 59-58, and then the Eagles held off a pesky Marshall Academy team at home to take the win, 64-57. The Eagles were led by Jordan Wilkins in the St. George’s game with 19 points, followed by Jake Jeffrey with 11 and Rodney Clarke with 10. Trey Wilkins contributed with nine rebounds for the night. The scoring was spread evenly among the team on Saturday in the win over Marshall with three Eagle players dropping in 10 points, Trey Wilkins, Rodney Clarke and Ryan Van Hoeck. Jake Jeffrey contributed with 11. The Eagles are 6-4 for the season as they go into their own Holiday Hoops Invitational.


December 11, 2010

The Eagles gave Fr. Ryan of Nashville a tough fight, but came up short in a non-region game, 46-37. The game was closer than it looks with the help of Jordan Wilkins’ 16 points and the Eagles were short starter Trey Wilkins, as he was playing the High School All-Star Football game. The Eagles hold a 4-4 record with two upcoming games and the SBA Holiday Hoops Tournament before Christmas.


November 30, 2010

The Eagle’s defeated Millington Central (0-2) at the Nest,  45-34. St. Benedict (4-2) was led in scoring by Rodney Clarke and Jake Jeffrey, who both totaled 11 points on the night. Ryan Van Hoeck was another Eagle in double digits as he tallied 10 points in a tough, hard-nose defensive effort on Tuesday night. From the tip, the Eagles pressured Millington and caused Millington to take ill-advised shots and many turnovers. In the fourth quarter, the Eagles were able to expand their lead off of baskets by Trey Wilkins and Rodney Clarke, and tough defensive stops when they needed them. “As a team, I think this was our best defensive effort of the year. I feel that we had great communication, and even though our shots weren’t falling, we were able to secure a win. I thought Jake Yarmowich and Peter Amrein played quality minutes for us tonight, and Rodney Clark and Trey Wilkins were able to cause some turnovers with their pressure. This is a good win, and we need to come ready to practice at a high level the rest of this week, as we play Bartlett on Friday.” The Eagles travel to their cross-town opponent, Bartlett High School on Friday night in hopes of another Eagle victory! Come out and support your Eagles Friday night at Bartlett at 7:30 pm tip.


November 26-27, 2010

The Eagles traveled to Cleveland (TN) High School for their Thanksgiving Classic Tournament for two games. The first game was with the host team, Cleveland High School. The Eagles started out slow and got down 16 points at the half, but came back strong in the second half almost getting the win at the end. The Eagles lost 85-82, but had big nights from Jordan Wilkins with 23 points, Jake Jeffrey with 19 points, Anthony Denegri with 13 and Trey Wilkins with 11. The next game with Bradley Central was as tough and close, with the Eagles losing 65-60, dropping to 3-2 on the season. Rodney Clarke had a good night with 17 points, followed by Jake Jeffrey with 13, Ryan Van Hoeck with 12 and Jordan Wilkins with 10.


November 23, 2010

The Eagles traveled to Munford to meet up with a pesky, fast-gunning team, but SBA pulled away in the second half (particularly the fourth quarter) to get the victory 64-46. The 3-0 Eagles were led by senior guard Rodney Clarke with 15 points, Jordan Wilkins with 10 and Ryan Van Hoeck with 10 and 12 rebounds.


November 19, 2010

The Eagles hosted a scrappy Tipton-Rosemark team that looked like it might come down to the wire, but the Eagles held on to win 61-57. The Eagles were led by Rodney Clarke with 12 points and eight rebounds, followed by Jordan Wilkins with 10 points and seven rebounds. Ryan Van Hoeck had a good night with seven points, but pulled down 10 balls off the board to lead the Eagles in rebounds. 


November 16, 2010

The Eagles had a convincing 92-70 win against Houston High School in their season opener. The Eagles burst out of the gates quickly with a nine point lead to end the first quarter. After a frantic second quarter filled with free throws, the Eagles were able to sustain that margin into the half. Opening the third quarter, the Eagles were able to pressure the Mustangs into many transition layups off Mustang turnovers, and was able to extend the lead to 20 late in the third. The Mustangs could not recover and the Eagles moved to (1-0) on the young 2010-2011 season. The Eagles’ home opener is Friday night at The Nest against the visiting rebels of Tipton-Rosemark Academy.

November 6, 2010

The St. Benedict basketball team started preparations for the 2010-2011 season with a play day held here at the Eagle’s Nest. Although the eagles are missing 8 football players, this weekend proved to be about the young guns. The eagles first contest was against AAA Kirby High School at 9:30 am. The eagle’s held off Kirby for most of game and contributions from the younger players proved to be the story. The eagle’s lost the contest by 2. The next contest was against AAA Collierville. The eagles routed Collierville  by 20 and again a collective effort played a factor. At 1:30 pm the eagles hosted Germantown High School. This see-saw game had many lead changes with the eagles coming out on top by 8 pts. After dinner, the eagles played Wooddale High School, the 4th game of the day. Wooddale proved to be the better team Saturday night with a 10 point victory. Overall, Coach Caleb Marcum is pleased with the effort of his team on Saturday.  Head Coach Marcum said, “I think the guys played very hard all day. I think we faced some things that will better prepare us for the season. I feel the young guys contributed and are buying into the system. Overall, it was a good day to see just where we are, following a week of practice. I look forward to next week’s practice when we get our football players back. We have a lot of work to do!”
