February 18-19, 2011

The wrestling team closed out the year on a high note at the State Individual Tournament in Franklin. The Ealges finished 7th out of 18 teams with eight medalists: Jeff Lamer, 3rd at 189; Peter Zaleski, 4th at 103; Greg Stratman 4th at 152; Ben Kurth 5th at 145; Trevor Jenkins, Tom Lackie 6th at 160; Saeed Zarshenas 6th at 135 and Shahram Zarshenas 6th at 140.


December 11, 2010

The Eagles Wrestling Team competed at the Tullahoma Duals Tournament on December 11, 2010.  The tournament brought together 16 of the best teams in the state.  The day started out slowly with a lost to 3-time Defending D-I State Champion Bradley Central by a score of 70-3.  The Eagles lone win the match came from Junior 189-pounder Jeff Lamer.  In the next match, the Eagles defeated Blackman High School 47-34, despite giving up 18 points in forfeits!  In the Consolation Semi-finals tough, the Eagles were bested the Centennial High school 34-48.  The final match of the day was against the host school Tullahoma.  The Eagles overcame the home crowd placed 7th place overall by defeating Tullahoma in close 39-33 match.   


December 9, 2010

Last night the Eagles had an incredible match against Collierville High School. Collierville has had the Eagles’ number for the last two seasons, and the SBA wrestling team travelled to Collierville with 3 varsity starters out with various injuries. Despite giving up 3 forfeits, the Eagles entered the final match tied with Collierville 36-36. That’s when SBA Senior Trevor Jenkins took the mat and decisively beat his opponent by a score of 13-1 and giving the Eagles the team victory by a score of 40-36. Other key wins for the Eagles were Andrew Schwab (171), Kyle Jennings (125), Greg Stratman (152), & Jeff Lamer (215). The win was a total team effort with several wrestlers competing in heavier weight classes and JV wrestlers stepping into the lineup. Way to go Eagles!!


December 8, 2010

The SBA wrestling team took on Kingsbury and Bolton on December 8th. Their first match was against a Kingsbury team that went very well. The Eagles came out of top by a score of 62-5, losing only one match during the Dual. Next, the Eagles had an exciting match with Bolton High School. The match went back and forth and came down to final match. SBA’s Patrick Wallis, a sophomore and 1st year wrestler, managed to secure a pin against Bolton to swing the final score in favor of the Eagles who won 43-36.


December 3-4, 2010

The SBA wrestling competed in the first regular season individual tournament of this season at the Black Horse Invitational hosted by Houston High School this weekend. The team brought 11 wrestlers, and of those 8 placed in the top 8 for their respective weight classes:

  • James Bond, 119 lbs, 7th Place
  • Mikey Bascom, 125 lbs, 8th Place
  • Trevor Jenkins, 130 lbs, 6th Place
  • Saeed Zarshenas, 135 lbs, 4th Place
  • Shahram Zarshenas, 140 lbs, 2nd Place
  • Ben Kurtz, 145 lbs, 8th Place
  • Greg Stratman, 152 lbs, 3rd Place
  • Jeff Lamer, 189 lbs, 2nd

Place Along with his 2nd place finish, Jeff Lamer’s overtime loss in the finals was awarded the best match of the entire tournament.  

The team as a whole finished very well.  The team scored a total of 124 points to place 7th in the tournament that had 22 teams competing including state championship teams from TN, AL, & LA.

The team has a very busy week ahead of them with matches at Bolton on Wednesday, at Collierville on Thursday, and Dual Tournament at Tullahoma High School on Saturday. 


November 30, 2010

In a meet hosted by Bartlett, the SBA wrestling team competed against Southwind and Bartlett. The night started well against Southwind High School with SBA winning easily by a score of 63-15.  Pins were scored by John Vassallo, James Bond, Mikey Bascom, Trevor Jenkins, Saeed Zarshenas, Shahram Zarshenas, Ben Kurtz, & Greg Stratman. The second match of the night was against Bartlett High School. It was a hard fought battle, and despite securing seven pins, the match ended in a 42-42 tie, however due to Dual Meet tie-breaker criteria, Bartlett was awarded the win. The team now has a record of 3-1 and will compete in the first varsity individual tournament this weekend at the Houston Black Horse Invitational.


November 23, 2010

The SBA wrestling team notched their first two dual team victories against Cordova and Brighton. They started against Cordova, who defeated the Eagles last year by just one point. Despite the team missing wrestlers at the 215 and 285 pound weight classes, the Eagles avenged last year’s loss by beating Cordova 52-21. The Eagles were led by their six seniors who all scored victories: James Bond (pin), Trevor Jenkins (forfeit), Saeed Zarshenas (14-4), Shahram Zarshenas (pin), Greg Stratman (pin), and Drew Schwab (forfeit). Sophomore Ben Kurtz and Junior Jeff Lamer also scored pins for the Eagles. Next SBA took on Brighton and won by a score of 69-6. Brighton’s only points came via a SBA forfeit at 285. The Eagles are back in action at Bartlett to take on Bartlett and Southwind on Tuesday, November 30th, at 6:00pm.
