Attendance

• When a student must be checked out of school for a medical appointment, the parent should send in a written note the morning of the appointment. The note should contain the time the student is to leave, if student is returning and whether student will be picked up by a parent/guardian or can be released to drive. Before checking out, students must contact the teacher of any period to be missed to turn in work that is due, take a test/quiz or re-schedule a test/quiz with faculty permission. At the time of check out, student must report to the office and sign out. Students returning to school from an appointment, should bring a note from the respective medical office. 
• Students must submit all assignments due on the day of check-out prior to leaving campus, particularly if they plan to check out for any reason. Students are not allowed to check out after 2:15 pm. Please plan ahead if there are afternoon appointments. 
• Absences from two class periods will count as a half-day absence. 

Students must be fever-free and symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school. Students sent home during the school day with a fever or illness will not be allowed to return the following day to ensure the safety of the entire school community.

St. Benedict's calendar offers extended weekends. Parents are encouraged to schedule trips during these breaks to minimize disruption to learning.
Missed assignments due to vacations or trips are the student’s responsibility. Teachers are not obligated to provide advance make-up tests or assignments for such absences.

A planned absence must be excused by the Academic Dean. A parent or guardian should email the Academic Dean at least 2 weeks in advance to request that a planned absence be excused. If the absence is excused, the student must submit all announced work by the due date and the student will take any missed test/quiz when the student returns to campus.

• Students who are absent from school due to illness, a death in the family, or family emergencies must have a parent phone call and a signed statement to have their absence recognized as excused, thereby allowing for make-up work. For any other reasons, students must obtain prior approval from Dr. Elizabeth Fischer by emailing her at fischere@sbaeagles.org for the absence to be classified as excused. Failure to follow this procedure or if the absence is deemed unexcused will result in missed work receiving no credit.
• All assignments must be made up within the designated time frames outlined below, regardless of whether the absence is excused. If an absence is approved in advance, the school is not obligated to prepare assignments or administer tests/quizzes prior to the absence.
• Students will have an equal number of calendar days to make up work for each day missed after returning (up to a maximum of 96 hours).
• Students, with parental permission, can be excused to attend the championship final event for any of our “team” competitions, except for those held during the week of semester or final exams. 
• Excused absences still count against a student’s attendance record for exam exemption purposes.

• Students absent from school without school permission or are absent without  parental knowledge are deemed unexcused. All work missed during that absence will result in no credit. The student also faces possible suspension from school. 
• St. Benedict is obligated to contact the Catholic Schools Office as soon as a child has missed five (5) non-excused days whether consecutive or non-consecutive. The school will submit to the Superintendent a written report including the child and parent names, address with zip code and phone number; child’s date of birth; school name; school address with zip code and phone number; name and official title of person making the report and notation of how many days are missed with individual dates.

Students who are too ill or incapacitated to attend classes cannot participate in any afternoon or evening extracurricular activities.
Students must attend a minimum of five (5) consecutive class periods to be eligible for participation in after-school activities.
Exceptions can be made for extenuating circumstances with prior approval from Administration.

In the case of excessive absences, St. Benedict requires written documentation from recognized medical personnel outside the home.
Absences from two class periods will count as a half-day absence. Students are responsible for obtaining assignments from classmates.

Students who exceed ten classroom absences in a semester (with two tardies equating to one absence) will receive a zero for the semester in that class. Any student with more than 24 cumulative absences in a year may be ineligible to re-enroll at SBA the following year.
